HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) will continue its efforts to improve highway safety through the installation of raised pedestrian crossings on Farrington Highway at the highway’s intersections with Ala Walua Street, the Waianae High School exit, Alawa Place, and Maiuu Road.

Work to install the raised crosswalks will begin nightly between 9 p.m. and 4 a.m. Tuesday, August 6 through Thursday, August 8, 2019. Lanes will be closed in each direction on Farrington Highway between Ala Walua Street and Maiuu Road to allow for the installation of the raised crosswalk across the roadway. One lane in each direction will remain open at all times. All four raised crosswalks will be completed by the end of Thursday night’s closure, weather permitting.

HDOT is seeking to protect these existing crosswalks through the use of raised crosswalks as they are not coupled with a traffic signal and are heavily used by the community. Raised crosswalks promote pedestrian safety by improving the visibility of pedestrians in the crosswalks and providing drivers a physical reminder to reduce vehicle speed at the crosswalk. As a reminder, the speed limit on this stretch of Farrington Highway is 25 mph.

Raised crosswalks were previously installed on Kalihi Street fronting the King David Kalakaua Middle School. HDOT continues to study the effectiveness of these pedestrian safety measures alongside the pedestrian gateway systems that were previously installed on Farrington Highway at its intersections with Glenmonger Street, Bayview Street, Army Street, and Kaupuni Street.
