Weight limit reduced for Mayor Bryan Baptiste Memorial (Cane Haul) Bridge on Kuhio Highway in Wailua; Mauka Wailua Bridge remains closed
Posted on Apr 21, 2020 in Highways Posts, Main, NewsLIHUE – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) informs the public that the weight limit for the Mayor Bryan Baptiste Memorial Bridge (Cane Haul Bridge) is reduced to 20 tons as of April 21, 2020.
This weight reduction does not have any effect on passenger vehicles, which typically weigh two tons. Emergency vehicles may be affected. HDOT is coordinating with county emergency response on access to the areas for their vehicles.
Commercial vehicles and trucks with routes taking them over these bridges should apply for an overload permit or adjust their loads. More information on overload permits for state roads and bridges can be found at this link.
The weight reduction is in effect from the date of the posting. Electronic message boards advising of the weight reduction have been posted at the bridge.
HDOT is putting these weight limits in place due to scour damage found on the northern piers of the bridge in an underwater inspection after flooding in late March.
The Wailua River Bridge mauka of the Mayor Bryan Baptiste Memorial Bridge is currently closed and southbound traffic is contraflowed on the Mayor Bryan Baptiste Memorial Bridge 24-hours a day, seven days a week until further notice.
An update will be provided once repair design is finalized.
