HONOLULU – The state Department of Transportation (DOT) received an award for excellence from the Hawaii Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA) for its Statewide Pedestrian Master Plan.  The Plan identifies the most critical needs of the state’s highway system infrastructure, including safety improvements or repairs, and will provide guidance for future projects to address problems.

“Pedestrian safety continues to be a top priority for the DOT and our straightforward goal is to decrease the number of pedestrian injuries and fatalities statewide,” said DOT Director Glenn Okimoto.  “The Statewide Pedestrian Master Plan was developed through a community-based process and we want to thank all of our partners who helped shape the Plan to make their communities safer for the future.”

The Plan envisions a multi-modal transportation system that provides a safe pedestrian network, encouraging walking among all ages and abilities, and improved balance between pedestrians, bicyclists, automobiles and other modes of transportation.

“The Plan exemplifies excellence in transportation planning through innovation, comprehensiveness, and effective implementation,” said an APA press release. “In addition, best practices from around the world related to planning, design, operation, education, enforcement, and encouragement to enhance the environment of pedestrian travel were compiled and adapted to match the unique needs and characteristics of Hawaii.”
