DOT launched the H-1 Freeway PM Contraflow Project in a groundbreaking ceremony earlier today. The project will create a dedicated ZipperLane in the westbound direction for weekday afternoon rush-hours to provide extra capacity on the H-1 Freeway between Pearl Harbor, near the Radford Drive Overpass, and Waikele, over a distance of approximately 7.2-miles.

Today the Department of Transportation held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Kawela Stream Bridge Replacement Project on the island of Molokai. The new bridge will be 21-feet longer and 19-feet wider complete with 10-foot wide shoulders for pedestrians and bicyclist. Totaling $6 million the new bridge will meet modern seismic and hydraulic standards.
The state DOT and the four county police departments are reminding everyone to buckle up every day, day or night. The national 2012 “Click It or Ticket” seat belt enforcement mobilization kicks off on May 20 and runs through June 3, but local law enforcement officers will be strongly enforcing seat belt safety laws around the clock and year-round.
Beginning at 10 p.m. on Monday night, May 14, the northbound lane of Puhi Road, approaching Kauai Community College, will be closed continuously between the Puhi Park Entrance and Kaumualii Highway for road construction for approximately four weeks.
DOT requests the public’s assistance to help stop new thefts of copper wiring on the H-3 Freeway. Sometime in late April, electrical copper wiring was cut on the Halawa-side of the tunnels, near the Halawa Interchange. This rendered all emergency callboxes and six traffic monitoring cameras on the Halawa-side of the tunnels inoperative. Motorists are asked to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity along state highways to the police immediately.
Beginning at approximately 9 p.m. on Monday night, April 23, Kaumualii Highway traffic in both directions will be rerouted onto the newly-installed concrete pavement at the Nawiliwili Road intersection, near the Kukui Grove Shopping Center. The modified traffic pattern will remain in effect for approximately three months to aid in roadway construction on the north side of the Nawiliwili Road intersection
Two new Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Infrastructure Grants were awarded for traffic safety improvements near two elementary schools on Maui. Crosswalk striping, raised curbing, improved signage and flashing beacon lights are among the improvements planned near Princess Nahienaena and Kamalii Elementary Schools.
Beginning Monday, March 5, 2012 all individuals renewing or applying for a new Hawaii driver's license or learner's permit will be required to show proof of legal presence in the United States. Documentation is required to establish, (1) legal name, (2) date of birth, (3) social security number, and (4) legal presence. Applications for scenic byways are being sought as the state designates two additional scenic byways. Hawaii Island’s Kau Scenic Byway—The Slopes of Mauna Loa and Kauai’s Holo Holo Koloa Scenic Byway were recently designated, bringing the state’s total to four (4). Nominations are due March 31, 2012. An application may be obtained at www.hawaiiscenicbyways.org.
A State-authorized motorcycle safety program will now be available on Kauai with the opening of Hawaii’s newest motorcycle safety training site in Lihue. DOT, Leeward Community College and Kauai Community College held a blessing ceremony today to dedicate the new site located at the Vidinha Stadium.
