HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) notifies Oahu motorists of current and upcoming scheduled work on the H-1 Freeway westbound in the vicinity of the Fort Shafter Offramp (Exit 19B). The work involves shortening the storage lane to the offramp and a single lane and exit closure to address drainage issues in the area. Details of the work are listed below.

As of Tuesday, Dec. 31 – Storage lane shortened/coned, exit still open

HDOT crews shortened the storage lane to the Fort Shafter off-ramp from H-1 westbound due to reoccurring pothole and drainage issues. Crews coned off a portion of the storage lane but the exit remains open. Electronic message boards have been placed to notify motorists.

Saturday, Jan. 18 – Exit and single lane closure

Closure of the Fort Shafter Offramp and right lane on the Moanalua Freeway is scheduled to begin Saturday, Jan. 18 from 6 a.m. – 12 p.m. HDOT crews will be adjusting the shoulder to provide for better drainage in the area. A permanent fix will be addressed in the Interstate Route H-201 Outbound Auxiliary Lane, Vicinity of H-3 Underpass to Fort Shafter Off-Ramp Project ((https://hidot.hawaii.gov/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/H201OBAux_PublicMtg_2019-11-20.pdf).

Westbound H-1 traffic will be detoured to the Likelike Highway Offramp (Exit 20A). Traffic should turn left onto School Street and can enter the H-201 westbound at the Middle Street Onramp. While the Fort Shafter exit will be closed, access to Fort Shafter will remain open. See detour route map below.

Motorists are advised to drive with caution, allow for extra travel time, and check traffic apps like GoAkamai.org for up to the minute traffic conditions and live cameras, before heading to their destinations. Roadwork is weather permitting.

Roadwork updates are posted weekly on the HDOT website at: https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/roadwork/ and released through our social media channels on Facebook and Twitter.
