HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) notifies motorists that the right turn lane from Nimitz Highway in the eastbound direction onto Sand Island Access Road will be closed on weekdays, beginning Monday, Nov. 4, through Friday, Nov. 8, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., for road improvements.

Construction on Sand Island Access Road will include a raised crosswalk at the Nimitz Highway intersection and a concrete pedestrian path on the right side of Sand Island Access Road from Nimitz Highway to Alahao Place. The pedestrian path is intended to facilitate a safe route for pedestrians to access Puuhale Elementary School. Roadwork is anticipated to be completed by December 2019, weather permitting.

During closure hours, motorists wanting to access Sand Island will be detoured to Puuhale Road then to Auiki Street to get back onto Sand Island Access Road.

Message boards have been posted to warn motorists of the closure and detour. Special duty police officers will be on site to assist with traffic control. First responders and TheBus have been notified.

For a list of weekly lane closure updates, please view our HDOT website at https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/roadwork/. HDOT advises motorists to allow for extra travel time and to drive with caution when getting to their destinations.
