The State Department of Transportation announces Safe Routes to School (SRTS) informational workshops. These workshops will provide participants with knowledge and skills to provide sound SRTS programs in order to make walking and bicycling safer and more appealing for children. Community leaders, school officials, health and transportation professionals, law enforcement officers, and parents and neighbors are encouraged to attend and participate for the SRTS strategies.

DOT announced plans to prepare for the annual "Beat the School Jam" on Monday, August 20, through Friday, August 24, to alleviate traffic congestion. Lane closures will be postponed, The H-1 Freeway Zipper Lane and the Nimitz Highway Contraflow Lane will be modified, and commuters are encouraged to use alternative ways of transportation.

Governor Neil Abercrombie declared August as “Pedestrian Safety Month in Hawaii,” the only statewide pedestrian safety month in the nation. Pedestrian-related community events and campaigns will be taking place throughout the month to encourage safe pedestrian behaviors, as well as to heighten drivers’ awareness of pedestrians, with the ultimate goal of saving lives and making Hawaii a safer place to walk.
