HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) is pleased to announce that the end is sight for the completion of the $42 million H1 Freeway Rehabilitation Project, which is on schedule for a July 2014 finish. In order to facilitate the timely completion, and as is allowed by contract, full nighttime lane closures will resume starting this Sunday night, April 20, at 8 p.m. Full closure dates and times are Sunday nights through Friday mornings from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m., nightly, for the duration of the project.

Full closures will begin in the eastbound direction for several weeks and then switch to the westbound direction. The closures will rotate every few weeks and may include closures in both directions in the last few weeks of the project. “As the project nears completion, the HDOT once again thanks the public for driving safely through the construction zone and for their patience as we work to improve the state’s highway infrastructure,” said HDOT Director Glenn Okimoto.

Remaining work includes:

· completion of freeway reconstruction

· paving with a two-inch layer of Hot Mix Asphalt

· additional paving with two inches of high-performing Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA)

· completion of widening the Nuuanu Stream Bridge and Palama Separation

· improved lighting, drainage, and glare screens

Project Benefits include:

With this and many other highway projects in construction the HDOT is launching a social media campaign for Work Zone Awareness Month. As part of #WZAM, HDOT encourages motorists to utilize two new hashtags: #HiWorkZone and #HiDOTyellow.

#HiWorkZone is a way to remind drivers to remain mindful of work zones and to slow down through them. Similar to #hitraffic, use this hashtag to better prepare yourself and fellow motorists of upcoming work zones. Check your feed for #HiWorkZone updates or share an update if you know of a work zone on your route. Know before you go!

#HiDOTyellow is an interactive tool you can use to honor the construction crews in work zones by sharing a photo of you, your friends or family wearing bright, high visibility yellow.
