Kalanianaole Highway Resurfacing Project Invests $14 Million in Improvements
Posted on Jun 18, 2014 in Highways Posts, NewsHONOLULU – Beginning Monday, June 23, the Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) Highways Division will begin work on the Kalanianaole Highway Resurfacing Project, a major New Day Work Project that, once complete, will provide a safe and smooth driving route for East Honolulu motorists.
In addition to reconstruction and resurfacing of 21 lane miles of roadway from West Hind Drive to the vicinity of Hanauma Bay Road, the project will also including utility maintenance and upgrades, road marking installations, guardrail repairs, and landscaping and irrigation improvements.
“The Kalanianaole Highway Resurfacing Project is a significant investment in East Honolulu’s aging highway infrastructure,” said HDOT Interim Director Ford Fuchigami. “It is one of six New Day Work Projects on Oahu alone that are addressing vital transportation corridors.”
The $14 million project is funded with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds. It is anticipated to be completed by February 2016.
Since taking office, the Abercrombie Administration has released more than $3 billion for New Day Work Projects across the state. These capital improvement projects invest in state infrastructure and facilities – from highways, airports and harbors to schools and transformative technological upgrades – while propelling economic growth forward and creating job opportunities for local residents. According to the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism’s (DBEDT) 2014 “Construction Industry in Hawaii” report, the construction sector is expected to be one of the main engines for economic growth in 2014 and 2015.
Work Scheduled to Avoid Peak Traffic
Work is scheduled between the morning and afternoon rush hours to minimize disruptions and delays. Construction will begin near West Hind Drive heading eastbound with two-lane closures beginning at 9 a.m. Work will finish at 3 p.m. each day except in emergency situations. As the project progresses, construction may start as early as 8:30 a.m. in certain sections. Motorists are encouraged to slow down and drive with aloha through the construction zone.
Lane closure information will be distributed to the media weekly, will be available on the HDOT website at hidot.hawaii.gov, and will be released through our social media channels on Facebook and Twitter. Live traffic cameras are available at GoAkamai.com.
