Public information meeting scheduled regarding the Kalanianaole Highway improvements project phase 1

HONOLULU – The State of Hawaii, Department of Transportation, Highways Division (HDOT) will be holding a public information meeting on the Kalanianaole Highway Improvement Project Phase 1, between the Olomana Golf Course and the Vicinity of Poalima Street. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the ongoing construction activities for Phase 1 and to present new pedestrian safety and operational improvements being considered for Phase 1 and for the future Phase 2 project from Olomana Golf Course to Vicinity of Makai Pier.

In March 2016, HDOT initiated a pedestrian study on Kalanianaole Highway from Olomana Golf Course to Vicinity of Makai Pier to identify pedestrian usage, needs, and to make recommendations for safety treatments. The study’s recommendations for pedestrian safety and operational improvements will be presented at this meeting.

The proposed improvements for Phase 1 includes installing raised medians near Flamingo Street, Kumuhau Street, and Humuniki Street; traffic signal at Kumuhau Street; shortening crosswalk distances at Flamingo Street, Saddle City Road, Humuniki Street and Mekia Street; marked crosswalk with diagonal raised median at Humuniki Street; bus stop consolidation and relocation and various signage and markings improvements.

The proposed improvements within the future Phase 2 project limits includes installing berm curbing and asphalt path; rectangular rapid flashing beacons at Moole Street and Nakini Street; marked crosswalk with diagonal raised medians at Waimanalo Beach Park and Huli Street; bus stop consolidation and relocation and various signage and markings improvements.
