Reminder to Motorists: H-1 Freeway Airport Viaduct Deck Repairs Continue on Weekends
Posted on Jul 25, 2014 in Highways Posts, Main, NewsHONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) advises Oahu motorists of ongoing road work on the H-1 Freeway Airport Viaduct, and closures on Nimitz Highway, for deck repairs. Closures on Nimitz Highway are a safety precaution due to hydro-demolition work occurring above.
This project will replace approximately 94,000 square feet of concrete deck on the Airport Viaduct. Weakened portions will be removed using high pressure water, and sealed with a fast-setting concrete to complete the repair. Expansion joint repairs and pavement striping will also be done. The project primarily consists of weekend work and will run through 2015.
As this project progresses, motorists are reminded to adhere to the reduced, 15 mph speed limit in the work zone area in order to minimize traffic induced vibrations that may lead to cracking in the newly repaired deck. In addition, this reduced speed ensures the safety of both motorists and construction crews working on the viaduct.
Motorists are also encouraged to use the left shoulder lane on the airport viaduct while road work is taking place. This lane will remain open and available for use.
Upcoming lane closures for the Airport Viaduct are as follows:
· Partial closure of the intersection of Nimitz Highway and Valkenburgh Street from 9 p.m. on Friday night, July 25, through 9 a.m. on Sunday morning, July 27, due to deck repairs on the H-1 Freeway Airport Viaduct. Left turns at the intersection of Nimitz Highway and Valkenburgh Street will not be permitted. Detours will be implemented.
· Lane closures on Nimitz Highway in the eastbound direction between Elliott Street and Aolele Street from 9 p.m. on Friday night, July 25, through 4 a.m. on Monday, July 28, due to deck repairs happening above on the Airport Viaduct. This is a safety precaution due to demolition of the freeway above.
· Right lane closures on the H-1 Freeway in the eastbound direction between the Radford Drive Overpass and the Airport Off-Ramp (Exit 16) from 9 p.m. on Friday night, July 25, though 4 a.m., Monday, July 28, for deck repairs on the Airport Viaduct. All ramps to and from the airport will remain open.
