Roving closure scheduled on the H-1 Freeway for improvement project, Feb. 13
Posted on Feb 12, 2018 in Highways Posts, Main, NewsUpdate: Due to wet weather conditions the roving closure mentioned below is postponed until tomorrow night, Thursday, February 15. Should wet weather occur tomorrow as well, the work will be conducted the following night.
HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) advises Oahu motorists of a roving closure on the H-1 Freeway in both the eastbound and westbound directions between the H1/H2 merge to the Halawa Interchange beginning at approximately 10 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2018 and ending at 4 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2018.
The roving closure is to facilitate a survey of the freeway by a vehicle-mounted ground penetrating radar. The survey vehicle must drive over the freeway multiple times at slow speeds to capture data to allow the design-build team to accurately prepare casts to rehabilitate the asphalt concrete on the H-1 eastbound from the vicinity of the Waimalu Viaduct to Halawa. The work is weather permitting. In the event weather postpones the scheduled work, the survey will be conducted the following night.
Honolulu Police Officers will be on site and will accompany the survey crews. Motorists are urged to drive with caution.
As mentioned in the December State Highways update, this design-build project includes pavement rehabilitation and widening the current 10-foot shoulder to allow for a 24-foot wide eastbound shoulder that can be used for unrestricted vehicular traffic. The project was awarded in January to the Kiewit Corporation at a contract amount of $63 million. Physical construction for the rehabilitation and shoulder work is scheduled to begin in April 2018.
