LĪHUʻE – The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) is notifying motorists of upcoming closures for the week of March 20, on Kaumualiʻi Highway (Route 50) as a continuation of the Kaumualiʻi Highway Intersections Improvements project.

Hawaiian Telcom crews will be relocating utility poles along Kaumualiʻi Highway in preparation for safety improvements at the highway’s intersections with Kuli Road and Lauoho Road.

The intersection improvements will increase safety through construction of left-turn pockets. This will give drivers turning onto Kuli Road and Lauoho Road from Kaumualiʻi Highway more time to judge when it is safe to make the left-turns at these intersections. To create these turn pockets, HDOT must construct retaining walls, widen Kaumualiʻi Highway between the two intersections, and improve existing road features such as drainage, guardrails, and pavement markings. Estimated completion date for the work, weather permitting, is late Summer 2023.

The utility relocations will require a single lane closure of the eastbound lane on Kaumualiʻi Highway (Route 50) from Monday, March 20 through Friday, March 31 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the vicinity of Kōloa Road and Hokua Road. During closure hours, alternating traffic will be contraflowed through the westbound lane.

The evening of Monday, March 20 April 3, there will be a single lane closure in the eastbound direction of the same work area, in the vicinity of Kōloa Road and Hokua Road, from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. for restriping of the
highway to install barriers that will allow for construction of the highway widening in this area.

Work does not include weekends and the upcoming Prince Kūhiō Day holiday on March 27.

Motorists are advised to utilize alternate routes, if possible; expect delays and proceed with caution through the work area. Electronic message boards will be in place to notify motorists of closure information.

Please note all roadwork is weather permitting. For Kauaʻi weekly road closure information visit: https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/roadwork/kauai/
