Multiple lane closures scheduled on the H-1 Freeway from Aiea to Pearl City for the weekend of May 4

HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) notifies Oahu motorists that micropile installation work between the Pearl City/Waimalu offramp and the H-1/H-2 split and paving for the H-1 Shoulder and Portland Cement Concrete Pavement Rehabilitation project will result in multiple closure on the westbound and eastbound H-1 Freeway in Central Oahu. HDOT contractors are performing this needed preservation work on one of the most highly used sections of roadway concurrently on the weekend of May 4-6, 2018 in an attempt to lessen the impact of road closures on the traveling public.

For the micropile installations, two to three right lanes will be closed on the westbound H-1 Freeway between the Pearl City/Waimalu offramp (Exit 10) and the H-1/H-2 split from 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2018, continuously through 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 6, 2018. Lanes will be reopened before Sunday at 6 p.m. if the micropile foundations have developed enough strength. See closure details below.

  • Three right lanes will be closed from 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2018 through 9 a.m. on Sunday, May 6, 2018 for concrete pours.
  • Two right lanes will be closed from 9 a.m. on Sunday, May 6, 2018 through 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 6, 2018 as the concrete cures.
  • The Waipahu offramp (Exit 8B) will be closed from 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2018, continuously through 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 6, 2018.

HDOT is maximizing this weekend’s roadwork schedule and construction crews to expedite completion of the remaining micropile work, which was originally scheduled to take place over four weekends. This is anticipated to be the third and final weekend closure needed for the micropile installations, weather permitting. Motorists will be able to access the Pearl City/Waimalu offramp (Exit 10) from the H-1 Freeway; however, there will be no dedicated exit lane because crews will be working in the shoulder.

Construction has been working to reinforce the pavement of the right lane on the H-1 Freeway to protect the drains under the roadway. This section of the roadway was not designed to support heavy traffic, but was opened to daily use following the addition of the second Zipper lane in Summer 2016. As the installations involve concrete pours, continuous closures are necessary to allow the concrete time to cure properly. During the curing periods, the majority of the personnel and equipment will vacate the work site, but lanes will remain closed as the concrete hardens.

Eastbound direction

  • Two right lanes will be closed between the Pearlridge/Waimalu offramp (Exit 10) and the Aiea Height Drive overpass on Friday night, May 4, 2018, at 6:30 p.m. A third lane will be closed at 7:30 p.m. and all lanes will reopen at 6 a.m. on Saturday morning, May 5, 2018.
  • Two left lanes will be closed between the Pearlridge/Waimalu offramp (Exit 10) and the Aiea Height Drive overpass on Saturday night, May 5, 2018, at 6:30 p.m. A third lane will be closed at 7:30 p.m. and all lanes will reopen at 6 a.m. on Sunday morning, May 6, 2018.

Westbound direction

  • Three right lanes will be closed between the Halawa Interchange and the Pearl City/Waimalu offramp (Exit 10) from 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2018, through 10:15 a.m., Sunday morning, May 6, 2018.

Electronic message boards will be posted to warn motorists of the closures. Special Duty Police Officers will be on-site to assist with traffic control. Weekly roadwork updates will be posted on the HDOT website at http://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/roadwork/ and released through our social media channels on Facebook and Twitter.

HDOT advises motorists to allow for extra travel time and check traffic apps, like GoAkamai.org for up to the minute traffic conditions and live cameras, before heading to their destinations. Roadwork is weather permitting.
